Om kursen
This Course will include an understanding of philosophy from a broad comparative approach. Initially looking at source material from different philosophical systems, including for example European and classical Greek philosophers as well as the Eastern systems. The material is chosen for it’s relevance to self inquiry and the nature of existence.
The focus then moves to Indian Philosophy, giving a brief overview of the 6 major schools, paying particular attention to Samkhya, Yoga Sutras, Advaita Vedanta. It’s impossible to discuss philosophy without includinging an introduction to Buddhism, this will be a large component of the course.
The relationship between Buddhism, Yoga and Indian thought in general will be explored. All of this will be set in a socio-historical context, examining the evolution and interdependence over time. What relevance and relationship do they all have to what we are doing in yoga today and to our own lives? This is maybe the most important question of the whole course and students will be made to think about this in their own way.
We will also bring in psychology looking at both buddhist and yogic understandings of the mind, meditation and their continued importance in todays modern society.
The course will be held in English.
Teacher
Guy Powiecki
Guy’s journey with yoga began in an academic setting, studying Yoga and Buddhism as part of his university theology degree. But it wasn’t until nearly a decade later that the practice truly claimed his life. What started as a physical healing journey soon transformed into a profound exploration of the mind, body, and the very nature of existence.
With over ten years of teaching experience, Guy brings a rare blend of intellectual depth, practical expertise, and embodied wisdom to every class. His extensive studies span Ashtanga, Hatha, alignment-based practice, pranayama, philosophy, Yin, and meditation. He has spent several years immersed in traditional practice in Asia, living and studying in yoga institutions and monasteries. His principal teachers include Richard Freeman, Sri O.P. Tiwari, and Bhante Bodhidhamma.
Guy’s teaching is both challenging and deeply mindful. Grounded in the psychological and philosophical roots of the yoga tradition, his classes are designed to support real transformation – psychologically, energetically, and physically. He weaves together postures, breathwork, and meditation into an integrated experience that meets students where they are and helps them grow.
A core teacher on Yogayama’s 500-hour programs, Guy is also one of Europe’s most experienced pranayama instructors. Certified as a personal trainer, he brings a nuanced understanding of the body’s mechanics to his work; whether on the mat or in daily life.
Outside the studio, you might find Guy on a Buddhist meditation retreat (when family life allows), diving deep in freediving adventures, or sharing his surprisingly vast knowledge of sharks.
