Hatha yoga can be described as the physical practice of Raja yoga, Rajayoga representing the entire practice and aspect of yoga. Hatha yoga targets the nadis/ energy channels of our body to bring both body and mind to balance. Ha representing sun and the pingala nadi, while tha represents the moon and ida nadi of our body. The nadis ida and pingala runs along the sides of the spine and unite at the base of the spine and rises through sushumna nadi that is placed in the center of the spine to awaken our kundalini. Kundalini is the sleeping coil that sits at root of our spine. The Indian traditions says that Hatha yoga came from Lord Shiva ́s teaching to his consort Parvarti and that it was her that took the practice to humans/seers.
Hatha was conceived as a means of preparing the body for meditation and eventually evolution of consciousness. It is considered a foundation for other types of yoga. In this spirit, we have categorized the asanas, pranayama, bandha, mantra, meditation, etc. into different levels with the understanding that the practices in earlier levels purify the system and serves as a strong foundation for practices later on. With this grouping of levels, we hope that students will gain a better understanding and respect for the power of the practices to move energy through their bodies without feeling overwhelmed. Our hatha classes are at mid tempo and designed to ignite the body and mind as well as cultivate body awareness.
Each class level includes chanting, breathing/pranayama, asanas (yoga poses), meditation, savasana.
